Aimed at honing the scriptwriting skills of regional writers and filmmakers, the Gulf Film Festival has launched the region’s first script market for short films. The script market will offer three days of hands-on script doctoring led by award-winning regional filmmakers, followed by the opportunity to pitch to emerging and established directors.
Egyptian director and scriptwriter Mohamed Khan, Lebanese director and scriptwriter Michel Kammoun, and accomplished Bahraini author and scriptwriter Fareed Ramadan will be the script market mentors for this first event.
According to Masoud Amralla Al Ali, Director of the Gulf Film Festival, the script market was created to fill a critical gap in the market created by a dearth of good scripts. “The script is the bedrock of any film, and the stronger the foundation, the better the film,” he said, whilst adding that combining the strengths of all parties – screenwriters, producers and directors – will increase the quality of filmmaking in the region.
Submissions to the inaugural script market are open until March 15th 2012 for filmmakers, scriptwriters, and authors, of GCC, Iraqi or Yemen nationality or origin. Scripts can be submitted in English or Arabic, with a maximum of two scripts per team/individual.
10 to 15 projects will be selected from amongst the entries, with shortlisted teams invited to a three-day mentoring session with industry professionals, to take place during the 2012 GFF. Arabic scriptwriting will be given a priority, and all the mentors associated with the programme are native Arabic-speakers and film professionals.
The fifth edition of the Dubai-based Gulf Film Festival will be held between the 10th and 14th April 2012. The 2011 Gulf Film Festival drew more than 1,400 submissions from 98 countries.
