Dubai Lynx is pleased to announce the 12 entries that have made it onto the shortlist for the Dubai Lynx and YouTube 7-Day Brief, the film competition which has put the region’s creative skills to the test. Answering to a brief set by the international organisation UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) participants had just seven days to make a 30-60 second film commercial, in English or Arabic and upload the film to YouTube for public viewing. The aim of the commercial is to raise awareness for UNHCR and to encourage those living in the GCC and MENA countries to make a monthly donation of $US100 to help Syrian refugee families receive the life-saving support they desperately need.
The jury, made up of seven industry leaders from the region, led by Bechara Mouzannar, Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett MENA, have since evaluated the 49 entries submitted for their creative flair and effectiveness in answering the brief, and after much deliberation have decided on the following shortlist:

Speaking about the competition, jury president Bechara Mouzannar, Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett, says, “The 7-day YouTube Brief has inspired this year a large number of users in the region to come up with an idea, an execution and a message through a video that they've made for a noble cause that interests the region. The shortlist includes a dozen of very interesting videos, and I encourage the public, and especially the ad industry to watch them online. I found it quite interesting to check how conceptual and how innovative the users would be when they are free to really communicate. I know the final vote came extremely tight. I am looking forward to announcing the name(s) of the winner(s) at Dubai Lynx.”
Tarek Abdalla, Head of Marketing at Google in MENA said “YouTube is an inspiring platform that drives creativity and we had some very original videos that were submitted for the competition. These young content creators have a unique opportunity to showcase their talent in raising awareness about Syrian refugees to different audiences around the world.”
Emma Farmer, Dubai Lynx Festival Director, adds, “The incredible response we have received to this year’s Dubai Lynx 7-Day Brief illustrates what an amazing opportunity this unique competition provides, not only is it a chance to showcase creative skills whilst raising awareness for a fantastic cause, there is also potential for this competition to act as a launch pad for the winner’s career prospects and provide entrants with an inspiring and unforgettable experience. There is an excellent spread of countries in this year’s shortlist, demonstrating the wide reaching scope and appeal of this unrivalled opportunity.”
The winner will receive an unbeatable all-expenses paid trip to the 2014 Dubai Lynx International Festival of Creativity, as well as the opportunity to recut their winning commercial with professional production facilities, with The Collective.
